Bivalves of the genera Teredo and Bankia which, in addition to wharf pilings and other wood, bore into ships with wooden hulls, often in great numbers and impacting the integrity of the wood to the point of destroying the ships (sometimes while at sea!); see also: BORING BIVALVE; TEREDINIFORM.
