User Manual: "Administrator" Level

The "Administrator" account is one of very high responsibility to the site. The smooth operation of the site depends heavily on the actions of those with Administrator level accounts.

Status:
  • The Administrator level of use provides the second highest level of control and access to the glossary and its database.
  • At this level of use, the user is logged into the system with their user account and the Administrator password.
  • This is a VERY trusted login level, with elevated responsibilities and respect for account data and the privacy of user-supplied personal data.

  • Capabilities:
  • Change the Editor password. Note that there is ONE Editor password that is shared by all Editors. Changing the Editor password will prohibit all Editors from logging in at that level (although they could still log in with their own username/password at the Contributor level). This is one way of rapidly shutting down Editor level access while keeping the site functional for visitors.
  • View and edit all user account data. The Administrator has access to account email addresses, and can change passwords for any account below the Administrator level (i.e., Contributors and Editors).
  • Elevate an account to Editor level (from Contributor) or demote an Editor level account to Contributor level.

  • Procedures:
  • The user's account must be designated as a Administrator by a Developer.
  • The user may log into his/her account alone, and thus sign in at the "Contributor" level.
  • The user may optionally also supply the Administrator password at login, providing the login session with Administrator rights.
  • Editing Accounts: Administrators cannot edit accounts at or above their own user level (3); they can only edit accounts existing at lower levels (1-2).
  • Promoting accounts to a higher level: You can only promote an account to a level below your own. Example: An Admin cannot assign an Admin level to another account (it must be done by a Developer). Administrators (level 3) can promote to a level below them: e.g., promote a Contributor Account (level 1) to an Editor account (level 2).
